Secondary school students across France are hard at work on their entries for the 2013-2014 National Contest on Resistance and Deportation – and many of them are drawing inspiration from USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive

French educators are attending a Teaching with Testimony in the 21st Century workshop today and tomorrow to learn about IWitness and using testimony in the classroom.

On the 70th anniversary of D-Day, in which Allied troops landed on the Normandy coast in France, USC Shoah Foundation has published a new online exhibit featuring the testimonies of soldiers and witnesses who recall that historic day.

On July 16 -17, 1942, over 13,000 Jews from Paris and its suburbs were rounded up by French police in the early morning hours and forcefully taken from their homes to both the Vélodrome d’Hiver, a winter cycling stadium in Paris, and to the Drancy internment camp.

For the third year, USC Shoah Foundation is providing testimony clips that French high school students can use in the essays and audiovisual works they submit to the National Contest on Resistance and Deportation (CNRD).

Testimony from the Visual History Archive is being used as evidence to posthumously bestow Sister Louise the highest honor in the world for Holocaust rescuers, the title of Righteous Among the Nations from Yad Vashem.

This is the fourth year USC Shoah Foundation has provided an exhibit of relevant testimony clips that students may use for research or incorporate into their projects.

USC Shoah Foundation’s French consultant Emmanuel Debono published an article about USC Shoah Foundation and its use of testimony in the French review journal Études arméniennes contemporaines (Contemporary Armenian Studies).

A French-language testimony exhibit that first launched on the ENS Lyon campus last April has been published online.

The contest aims to perpetuate in students the memory of the resistance and the deportation in France during the Holocaust so that they can draw inspiration from it and draw civic lessons from it in their lives today.

The American University of Paris will host a workshop October 26-27, 2017, dedicated to sharing scholars’ experiences conducting research in the Visual History Archive. Applications are due May 9, 2017.
