USC Faculty Stipends Available
The USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education announces a program of stipends for USC faculty. Three stipends will be awarded in the amount of $5,000 each to assist USC faculty members with the integration of testimony from the Institute’s archive into new or existing courses. Proposals are due by September 8, 2009.
Between 1994 and 1999, the Institute conducted nearly 52,000 interviews with Holocaust survivors and other witnesses in 56 countries and in 32 languages. The testimonies encompass experiences not only of Jewish survivors, but also of others targeted by the Nazis, as well as liberators, rescuers, and war crimes trials participants. The subject matter ranges well beyond the Holocaust to include the history and culture of interviewees’ birth countries and of the countries to which they emigrated after World War II. The testimonies average two hours in length and contain information relevant to many disciplines.
The faculty stipend program provides financial support and staff assistance to faculty members who wish to use the Institute’s testimonies in their courses. There are no restrictions with respect to the disciplinary approach or methodology of the proposed courses. Awarded faculty will later be asked to provide the Institute with information about their experience of teaching with the interviews.
Proposals will be judged according to the centrality of the interviews to the course and the timeliness of when the course will be offered. Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received this award.
For any questions, please contact the Institute’s Director of Research and Documentation, Karen Jungblut at jungblut@usc.edu.
Applicants should send a one-page description of their anticipated project to Amber Mirafuentes at mirafuen@usc.edu.
Proposals are due by September 8, 2009.
Awards will be announced on October 9, 2009.
