Stephen D. Smith lectures in Ukraine on "Testimony in an Age of Violent Ideologies"
On September 8, Stephen D. Smith, Executive Director of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute, gave a lecture, titled "The Power of Words: Testimony in an Age of Violent Ideologies," and demonstrated the Visual History Archive at the Interdisciplinary Judaic Studies Program of the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (view photos). Smith founded the UK Holocaust Centre in Nottinghamshire, England, and cofounded the Aegis Trust for the prevention of crimes against humanity and genocide. He was also the inaugural Chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, which runs the National Holocaust Memorial Day in the United Kingdom. Click here to read his full bio
Smith was in Kyiv for the opening of the exhibition "Shoah by Bullets: The Mass Shootings of the Jews in Ukraine 1941-1944," presented by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in partnership with Mémorial de la Shoah, Yahad-In Unum, and the Ukrainian Embassies of Israel, France, Germany, and the United States. The exhibition will be on display at the Ukrainian House (2, Khreschatyk, Kiev) through October 3. The USC Shoah Foundation Institute and the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies have developed an educational program to enhance the exhibition.
