Call for Proposals for 2013 Teaching Fellow Program

USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education invites proposals for its 2013 Teaching Fellows program. Teaching faculty from all 43 VHA access sites are encouraged to apply. The fellowship provides summer support for instructors interested in creating a new course or modifying an existing course to incorporate testimony from the Visual History Archive. There are no restrictions with respect to the disciplinary approach or methodology of the proposed courses. 

The Institute’s Visual History Archive (vha.usc.edu) holds nearly 52,000 video testimonies of survivors and other eyewitnesses to the Holocaust and the Rwandan Tutsi Genocide. The interviews were taken in 33 languages and in 57 countries. They encompass the experience of survivors as well as liberators, rescuers, and post-genocide trial participants. As these interviews are life histories, their subject matter includes the history and culture of the countries of the interviewees’ birth and their lives before, during and after the genocides. The interviews average 2 hours in length and offer a wealth of possibilities for integration into many disciplines’ coursework.

Award decisions will be based on:

• The centrality of the testimonies to the course content.
• The amount of work necessary to identify the best material and incorporate it into the course.
• Preference will be given to classes that will be taught in the 2013-2014 academic year for existing courses and the 2014-2015 year for new course proposals.
• Preference will also be given to applicants who have not previously received this award.  

Stipends will be awarded in the amount of $2,000 each with an additional $500 for in class materials related to the archive. 

Awarded faculty will spend 10-15 hours in residence either in the Institute’s offices at USC or with their local campus facilitator. They will also consult with Institute staff to be introduced to the archive and to receive specialized research assistance in preparing for their course. Final course syllabi will be posted to the Institute’s website and might be excerpted or used in other Institute materials. Faculty will also be expected to give a public presentation at their local campus at the end of the fellowship period.
