Kori Street, Director of Education, Speaks in Canada About Holocaust Education
USC Shoah Foundation’s director of education, Kori Street, will give two presentations this week in Montreal.
On Wednesday, Street will give a presentation and closing remarks at Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre’s Teachers Conference. The topic of this year’s conference is Telling Their Stories: Using Oral Histories in the Classroom.
Street’s presentation is titled “A Practical Approach to Using Testimony in Teaching.” Street will introduce teachers to IWitness, USC Shoah Foundation’s award-winning educational website, in a professional development workshop.
IWitness contains over 1,300 testimonies of survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides from USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive. Students may watch testimony, complete activities, and create their own video projects using a built-in video editor. 12,600 students are registered on IWitness worldwide.
In her closing remarks, “Teaching with Testimony: Bridging Theory and Practice,” Street will discuss how to engage students in learning about genocide through personal stories. There will also be a question and answer session with attendees to address some of the challenges and benefits of teaching with testimony.
Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre will host Street again on Thursday, in a public discussion and Q&A at Concordia University titled “The Human Story: Juxtaposition of Oral History and Technology.” Street will be joined by Dr. Steven High, Canada Research Chair in Oral History and co-director of the Centre for Oral History and Storytelling at Concordia.
Street and High will discuss how communities of genocide survivors respond to oral history projects, and what the potential impact is of using testimonies in education, research and other contexts.
