USC Shoah Foundation Seeking Candidates for Teaching and Research Fellowships

Scholars interested in developing college courses or conducting research using USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive are invited to apply for 2014-15 fellowships at USC Shoah Foundation.

Two fellowships are open for applications: Teaching and Research. All applications are due Fri., Feb. 21.

The teaching fellowship provides summer support for faculty at the Institute’s Visual History Archive access sites to integrate the Institute’s testimonies into new or existing courses. The faculty stipend program provides financial support and staff assistance to faculty members who wish to use the Institute’s life-history testimonies in their courses.  There are no restrictions with respect to the disciplinary approach or methodology of the proposed courses. 

Proposals will be judged according to the centrality of the interviews to the course content. Preference will be given to classes that will be taught in the 2014-2015 academic year for existing courses and the 2015-2016 year for new course proposals.

Stipends will be awarded in the amount of $2,000 each with an additional $500 for in class materials related to the archive.

Awarded faculty will spend 10-15 hours in residence either in the Institute’s offices at USC or with their local campus facilitator. They will also consult with Institute staff to be introduced to the archive and to receive specialized research assistance in preparing for their course. Final course syllabi will be posted to the Institute’s website and might be excerpted or used in other Institute materials. Faculty will also be expected to give a public presentation at their local campus at the end of the fellowship period.

Recent teaching fellows developed courses about witnessing the Holocaust and anti-Semitism in contemporary Czech society.

The research fellowship provides support during summer 2014 or one designated semester of the 2014-2015 academic year for undergraduate and graduate students interested in doing research at the Visual History Archive. Stipends will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 for graduate and $600 for undergraduate fellows. 

Students will be expected to spend 60 hours conducting research in the offices of the USC Shoah Foundation over the duration of their fellowship. Following the fellowship period, students will be expected to give a staff talk based on their work and findings and submit their final written work for archiving.

Recent research fellows studied music of the Holocaust and the French role in the Holocaust.
