USC Shoah Foundation Presents at Hungarian Consulate Conference in Serbia

USC Shoah Foundation International Training Consultant Andrea Szönyi gave a presentation in Subotica, Serbia, as part of a conference hosted by the Hungarian Consulate in honor of the anniversary of the deportation of the Jews of Subotica during the Holocaust.

The conference was held in the Main Hall of the Subotica Town Hall on Tuesday, June 16 – the 71st anniversary of the deportation. The conference also marks three months since Hungary assumed the 2015 Chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

Speakers included the mayor of Subotica, the Hungarian Chief Consul, the chair of the Subotica Jewish Community, the director of the Jewish Museum and Jewish Archives in Budapest, a local historian and a local architect working on synagogue architecture. It was attended by about 120 people and covered by the local TV news.

Szönyi’s presentation was titled “Personal Stories in Holocaust Education” and provided an overview of USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive and its educational programs for students and educators that utilize testimony of Holocaust survivors and witnesses.

Szönyi said after her presentation, local school principals and representatives of civil organizations approached her to ask about opportunities for collaboration on educational programs.
